Kurz vorgestellt: Multihaven Catamaran

28th Zwitserleven Round Texel Race

Den Burg / Texel, Netherlands: Wind, waves and shallow water... the 28th Zwitserleven Round Texel Race for beachcatamarans was a tough one. The surf became a huge playground for waves with boats as their toys. It was a challenge to get to the starting line, due to the onshore wind. Many participants crashed and were washed ashore. Even top sailors. Others decided to withdraw from the race and did not try to face the elements. Only 247 teams crossed the finishline, but 120 were disqualified. Wouter Samama and Jeroen van Leeuwen, sailing on a Tornado Spi, smashed the race and world record with almost twenty minutes. Mischa Heemskerk and Sander de Boer finished about four minutes later with their Hobie Tiger, which was enough for the victory on handicap.

At 8:00 hours on Saturday morning 11 June, race director Jaap Tirion wished all sailors a safe and good race. The north-north-west wind was force 5 to 6 and the waves were high. Xander Pols and Sven de Laaf were the first drop-outs among the favourites. Their M20 with brand new carbon sails capsized in the surf, after which the mast broke immediately. Gerard Loos, Rikkert Graat and Daan Koene followed. Mitch Booth and Herbert Dercksen had bad luck as well. Although they were able to start again, the frames inside their carbon Hobie Concept hulls were cracked, which forced them to give up.

Heemskerk and De Boer extended their lead and passed the second Tornado of Eduard Zanen and Willem Houwing, who finished third. Wouter Samama and Jeroen van Leeuwen flew after 2 hours, 11 minutes and 11 seconds over the finishline. An absolute record. Samama: "I think this one will remain a while." The winners of the 1997 Round Texel Race needed 2 hours, 30 minutes and 36 seconds. Hans Bouscholte and Ruurd van Wieren were 11 seconds faster in September 2003, but that is all history now.

There was another battle going on, because two F18 female teams were aiming at the Women's Cup. Wampe van der Poel and Marieke Engelsman sailed out first, but capsized in the surf. They came back safely and did not want to go out anymore. Until they saw the other girls leaving. Van der Poel: "We decided to try again and we made it." Kathelijn de Bruijne reached the light house as first female crew. After the VC-mark the female Repeat Team flipped over and Van der Poel/Engelsman passed them. At Oudeschild both teams were knocked down by a huge gust of wind. De Bruijne took over the lead and finished as first women team, but they were also on the dsq list. De Bruijne: "We passed the mark and went back to sail through the gate, but we could not convince the jury." As a result, Van der Poel and Engelsman won the Women's Cup, but they did not accept that. At the prize giving ceremony, they gave their Cup away to the team of De Bruijne. Van der Poel: "We do not like to win a race this way. The girls sailed correctly and we will beat them next year."

Winners' party
The prize giving ceremony became a great celebration. All winners were honoured on stage. Champaign flew plentifully, TNG Swiss Watches were handed over and flowers were thrown into the crowd. Heemskerk and De Boer won on handicap, followed by Kenbeek/Brouwer and Geijssen/Van Capelle. All F18-teams. The Zwitserleven Round Texel 2005 event ended with a fantastic sailor's party on the Texel Beach. There was more good news, because title sponsor Zwitserleven announced a prolongation of the sponsor contract with two more years. -- Diana Bogaards

Tornado World Championship

(20.05)

La Rochelle, France: Race 9 had nothing less than 19 boats black-flagged, including provisional leaders ESP Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz, which, at that point, cost them the title. The Spanish team entered the last day of the event with 11 points separating them from runner-up GBR Leigh McMillan and Will Howden. The situation changed dramatically with his black-flag plus the second place the British got in the race - McMillan and Howden were now 23 points ahead.

ESP Toni Rivas and Fabian Escude were the winners of the race and GBR Hugh Styles and Graham Vials, third.

The conditions again were similar to Saturday: sea-breeze 8 to 9 knots. But the wind dropped and Race 10 started under shifty and light winds and had to be cancelled once the breeze died completely.

ESP Echavarri and Paz put in a protest for redress as soon as they arrived on-shore. They had evidence that they were actually not over the line. After a long hearing the Jury ruled them correct and they were granted the redress which put them back in first place and World Champions.

Top five final results:
1. Echavarri/Paz, ESP, 43.90
2. McMillan/Howden, GBR, 48.00
3. Revil/Espagnon, FRA, 76.00
4. Polgar/Spalteholz, GER, 78.00
5. Guichard/Guyader, FRA, 83.00

La Rochelle, France: The measurement of the 62 boats entered in the ISAF Grade WC Tornado World Championship has finished smoothly, on time and without major problems. Now a fleet packed full of World and Olympic champions past and present can concentrate on the racing and the battle to claim the 2005 World title.

The practice race scheduled for Sunday had to be cancelled due to a lack of wind - sea and land breezes were clashing and the boats were sent in, very different conditions from the previously few days when the sea-breeze was steady at 12-14 knots.

21 countries are represented in La Rochelle, with two more late entries from Greece, increasing the total entry list to 62 crews. There is no shortage of Olympic medallists, World champions and European champions vying for the 2005 title. Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher (AUT) match all three of those descriptions and the current Olympic champions will be looking to add to the World Championship title they won six years ago in Denmark. Darren Bundock (AUS) will be attempting to win his fifth World title with new crew Aaron Worrall. Mitch Booth is another former World Champion here with crew Herbert Dercksen (NED). Number one team in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, Roland Gaebler and Gunnar Struckman (GER), also count a World Championship title.

Top ten after two races:
1. Leigh McMillan / William Howden, GBR, 11 points
2. Johannes Polgar / Florian Spalteholz, GER, 11
3. Xavier Revil / Christophe Espagnon, FRA, 14
4. Hugh Styles / Graham Vials, GBR, 16
5. Enrique Fiquevoa / Jorge Hernandez, PUR, 20
6. Rob Wilson / Mark Bulkeley, GBR, 23
7. Yann Guichard / Alexandre Guyader, FRA, 26
8. Billy Besson / Romain Motteau, FRA, 28
9. Roman Hagara / Hans Peter Steinacher, 28
10. Andrew Walsh/ Edward Barney, GBR

"Dolphin Sky" Bericht vom Eigner

Hallo Othmar,

Soviel zu Dolphin Sky No. 1. Es wird sicher eine Nummer 2 geben.

3 Trimarans finish

Following the dawn arrival of Cotonella in Newport to take line honours for Franco Manzoli, there was only a gap of some 9 hours before the arrival of Roger Langevin in Branec IV. Roger was in turn followed only two and a half hours later by Piere Antoine in Spirit. This is one of the closest finishes in OSTAR history and a true reflection of the ultimate Corinthian challenge.

The skippers of the two French yachts had spent a frustrating final night plagued by fickle winds offshore, whilst the Italian skipper of Cotonella, Franco managed to sneak in from the North keeping closer inshore and finding a good breeze enabling him to snatch victory from the two French rivals grasp.

As the first Italian to win the OSTAR, Franco Manzoli has been the created quite a stir both in Italy and here in Newport. Now that Roger and Pierre have arrived back, the three skippers can enjoy a well earned meal and good night sleep and await the arrival of the first of the monohulls over the weekend.

(01.05)

ARCHIPELAGO RAID 2005

THE EXTREME RACE AMONG 100,000 ISLANDS

Stockholm, Sweden: The largest and most extreme orienteering sailing competition in the world, Archipelago Raid, will this year be even harder than its previous four editions. With one more day added to the race, the brave competitors will navigate in the Archipelagos of Stockholm, Åland and Finland during six days. Like the previous editions, two persons per team sail on the small, but very fast catamarans called the Formula 18. Paddling is allowed, so there is no time to rest, even in very light wind conditions.

The course will be longer and go more east than ever, to Nagu in the Finnish archipelago. Around 600 nautical miles will be sailed during these gruelling six days and nights.

Already last year the level of the competitors was high, with pro sailors from all over the world fighting for top position. Many of last year's stars are back, both local and foreigners, and a total of 35 teams are expected.

The start of Archipelago Raid is on August 15 in the heart of Stockholm. The finish is on August 20, in the famous sailing harbour of Sandhamn, in the archipelago of Stockholm. -- Josefine Lemmel

Oxygen Project
